During the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, the two discussed the use of masks and holding political rallies amid the pandemic.
When asked why he kept organizing the rallies, Trump said, “Because people want to hear what I have to say.” Trump also stated that his marches had not had a negative effect on the American people, saying, “Up until now, we had no problem at all.”
As the discussion continued, he began mocking Joe Biden for wearing a mask, after explaining his personal use of masks.
“I have a mask here,” said Trump, pulling the mask from his jacket pocket. “I wear a mask when I think I need it. I don’t wear masks like him,” Trump said. “Every time you see him, he has a mask.”
In response, Biden cited the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention information, which estimated that masks had the potential to save 100,000 lives by the end of the year.
“Masks make a big difference,” Biden said. “We will probably save 100,000 lives.” Trump denied the estimate. He said, “They have said the opposite.” Biden replied, “No one has said otherwise.”
Biden later said, “He was totally irresponsible with the way he dealt with social distancing and people wearing masks. Basically encouraging them not to do it. He’s a fool about this.”
The Vice President’s debate takes place on October 7th.
